Reason behind the idea ,”The Guinness book of records “was the argument between Sir Hugh Beaver and his hosts at the party.The idea came about in the early 1950’s when Sir Hugh Beaver , Managing Director of the Guinness Brewery, attended a shooting party in County Wexford ,Ireland.He and his hosts had an argument whether golden plover is fastest game bird in Europe or not .But they did not find exact answer in any reference book .

This argument led to this idea of ” The Guinness book of records”.Twins Norris (1925—2004) and Ross McWhirter (1925—75) who were fact-finding researchers from Fleet Street were invited by Sir Hugh to sort out pub argument .Guinness superlativeswas incorporated on 30th November.The office opened in two rooms in a converted gymnasium on the top floor of Ludgate House, 107 Fleet Street.He asked to compile a book of facts and figures .After all research it took 13 and a half 90-hour weeks, including weekends and bank holidays to write complete book.

It is a reference book published annually, listing world records both of human achievements and the extremes of the natural world.The Guinness Book of Records at 107 Fleet Street, the first 198-page edition was bound on 27 August 1955 and went to the top of the British best seller lists by Christmas.
