The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI),on Friday, has given the permission to access internet services and phone calls on board flight.
“The operation of mobile communication on aircraft (MCA) services should be permitted with minimum height restriction of 3,000 metres in Indian airspace”,the TRAI said. The height restriction is placed to avoid accessing terrestrial mobile networks.
“The onboard Wi-Fi facility can be only facilitated if the electronic device is in the flight/airplane mode”,TRAI said.
TRAI said “IFC service providers should be required to get themselves registered with DoT(Department of telecommunications )and need not necessarily be an Indian one. IFC service providers should be allowed to set up at a annual token license fee of Re1 .”
For all the types of aircrafts( such as commercial airlines, business jets and executive aircrafts) the procedure recommended for IFC services in Indian airspace will be made applicable.
Once this is finalised, for the first time, passengers in India will be able to surf the internet on plane, which is a common service in many foreign countries.
